Sandra asks…

Can tourists still smoke marijuana in Amsterdam? I’ve heard the laws have recently changed.?

I’m going to Amsterdam for spring break and am looking forward to smoking legally but someone at a party told me tourists over 18 can no longer smoke due to new EU laws. Is this true or was this guy just trying to ruin my day.

Yaz answers:

As far as I know, the only thing that changed recently is that hallucinogenic mushrooms became illegal in November. Cannabis in all its forms (marijuana, hashish, hash oil) is legal for personal use, though technically illegal to sell. It is widely tolerated, however, as long as the practice is not abused.

It should go without saying that you must be a conscientious tourist. Wherever you travel outside your home country, you are essentially an ambassador for your country and your actions must reflect that. Avoid being obvious, belligerent or publicly altered (no matter the source), don’t try to re-sell weed and obviously don’t try to take any out of the country with you. Read the second link for more practical information.

Have fun! And don’t forget to stroll the red light district. Absolutely fascinating.

Joseph asks…

Are there any laws about to change the freedom with marijuana in Amsterdam concerning tourists.?

Yaz answers:

Not that I know of.
The only thing I see maybe changing, is how the tourist may go in or out of the country with any thing on them.

Helen asks…

Can tourists still buy weed in amsterdam?? Has any new laws been passed?

Yaz answers:

Not the system of passes has not been implemented as of yet, so this means that tourists can still buy weed providing they are 18+. Neither the process has been passed for this to happen, and nor has a time frame been put into place as yet

Some people say it will happen within the year and some say that with the legal challenges and opposition that it will not happen this year, so I guess it remains to be seen when it does. However providing the government itself holds itself together (and it won’t be the first time a coalition government has come apart at the seams and borken up) then it will be a case of when rather than if, at least this is the case from everything I have read (Dutch newspapers, tv etc)

Mandy asks…

Is smoking weed still legal in Amsterdam for tourists?

I was planning on making a trip there to see the city and smoke and I was wondering if it was still legal? I know there have been articles saying that laws would be passed outlawing tourists from smoking there but I was wondering if anyone has been recently to find out if there is still smoking at coffeeshops?

Yaz answers:

Yes smoking is tolerated in Amsterdam until 2013.

I will make a standard answer for this one. In The Netherlands the policy on cannabis was quite liberal with good results. The possession of soft drugs for your own use is tolerated (but not legal). In the US, the UK, France and Germany there are more people (per 1000) who use cannabis than in the Netherlands. So the best would be to convince in those countries that a liberal option is better for the health situation.

The atmosphere is becoming less liberal because of the drugs-tourism and the rise of organized crime. That is why the new rules are being implemented.Coffee-shops will become private clubs for the local market.

These measures will be introduced in addition to the conditions that were already in place. These provide that coffee-shops are prohibited from placing posters, selling hard drugs, causing nuisance, admitting persons below the age of 18 or selling to them and from selling or stocking large quantities. (So you have to prove you are 18+!)

The new policy is implemented in the south of The Netherlands first and by 2013 the rules will apply in the north too.

Betty asks…

Has the law prohibiting tourists from smoking marijuana in Amsterdam coffee shops been implemented?

I need someone that has visited there recently/has sound knowledge on this topic to answer, please.

Yaz answers:

Hm I can understand that. I mean it’s not like this question has already been answered 60 times here since January 1st.

The new law should go into effect on January 1st 2013 in Amsterdam. So if you want to play drugs tourist you’ll need to do that this year
